D3A, The Tortoise Seeks the Mountain Hermit

by Kasuga Tsukaisute
After asking around a bit and finding a certain woodcutter who had been noted to him the previous evening, Tsukaisute makes his way up into the foothills of those mountains that make a valley of Tani Senshio. Soon enough, he finds a footpath that seems promising, and he follows it, coming in time to a newish-looking rude hut. Announcing himself, he enters and finds a ragged man with a daisho in his belt; the Kasuga bows and asks if he has found a man called Hitaro, "of whom I've heard from a priestess I know. She seemed interested in seeing such a man again."

The ronin seems confused by the matter and protests his unfitness. As well he should, given what he has done--or failed to do, says the other voice in the young man's mind. But the Tortoise's mouth speaks eloquently on behalf of his ally, saying that she seemed to long to see him again, and that surely a priestess of the great mother would forgive what sins have been committed. He says, "You should try to return to Moshi Fuyumi, Hitaro-san. She will value it, I think."

When, at length, the Tortoise heads back to town, the ronin seems to be in a better frame of mind.

Now, how can I speak with Fuyumi to let her know? Of course! What Lion could refuse a man the chance to honor the Heavens, and how better than with a miko to assist?

"You are right, Kasuga-san," Hitaro admitted, sounding somewhat abashed. His voice is rough and gravelly, as thought it were a rusted tool that had not been used in some time.

"I... I had hoped to abate my shame by withdrawing from the world. It was selfish of me to not consider how this would affect Fuyumi. I see that now."
